GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado On Friday, September 20, the Colorado River District will host the 2024 Annual Water Seminar at Colorado Mesa University’s Meyer Ballroom from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This highly anticipated event brings together water experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the Western Slope and beyond to discuss key issues affecting the Colorado River Basin.

This year’s theme, “Meet the Moment,” will highlight how today’s decision-makers will answer to all future generations who depend on the Colorado River and its tributaries. Expert speakers and panelists will discuss the evolving conditions, both natural and legal, impacting the future of Western water, including the effects of a rapidly changing climate, local efforts to secure the Shoshone water rights, and the ongoing interstate negotiations that will determine the future of Colorado’s namesake river.

“The challenges facing the Colorado River Basin are complex and growing,” said Andy Mueller, general manager of the Colorado River District. “This seminar provides a valuable opportunity for the community to learn about and discuss the actions underway to address these challenges and what the Colorado River District is doing to ensure the Western Slope’s water needs are met today and for future generations.”

The event will feature a distinguished lineup of speakers, including Southern Ute Tribe Vice Chairman and Colorado Water Conservation Board director Lorelei Cloud, Family Farm Alliance Executive Director Dan Keppen, CWCB Director Lauren Ris, Colorado State Climatologist Russ Schumacher, and journalist and author Zak Podmore. Attendees can also participate in interactive panel discussions and network with water professionals, local elected leaders, and other interested citizens.

“Colorado Mesa University is proud to welcome the Colorado River District’s 2024 Annual Water Seminar,” said CMU President John Marshall. “As water challenges become more pressing, it’s essential for regional leaders, experts, and community members to come together and work toward solutions. CMU is excited to be the venue for these important conversations that will help secure the future of water for our region and beyond.”

The Colorado River District would like to welcome anyone interested in learning more about these critical issues to join them in the Meyer Ballroom in the CMU Student Center on September 20 at 8:30 AM.
