Join the Colorado River District on August 5th at noon, for a lunch-hour Zoom webinar focusing on rapidly declining water levels in Lake Powell and on the impacts of prolonged drought on West Slope water users.  

Lake Powell has been making the news a lot lately with sobering photos and headlines. This webinar will provide an opportunity for participants to learn more about this Basin-wide issue and how we got to this point. Three expert panelists will discuss their views on current conditions and possible future pathways for Colorado River water users.  

Discussion topics will include the longtime overuse of the Colorado River by Lower Basin states; the day-to-day effects of a 21-year drought on Western Colorado soil and stream conditions; and how past policy decisions impacted operations on the Colorado River. Finally, panelists will highlight their unique perspectives on how the current hydrological conditions and future policy decisions could affect the future of the Colorado River Compact.

Water With Your Lunch: Plummeting Powell panelists include: 

• Anne Castle, Senior Fellow at Getches-Wilkinson Center, CU Boulder Law School– Anne Castle’s research and practice focuses on western water issues including Colorado River operational policy and the integration of tribal water interests. She is a founding member of the Water Policy Group, and spent five years as Assistant Secretary for Water and Science at the U.S. Department of the Interior. She also serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Water Trust, and serves on multiple boards and advisory committees for policy and environmental organizations. 
• Steve Wolff, General Manager at Southwestern Water Conservation District Steve Wolff joined the Southwestern Water Conservation District (SWCD) as their General Manager in May of 2021.  Before joining Southwestern Water Conservation District, he worked as the Interstate Streams Division Administrator in the Wyoming State Engineer’s Office, where he oversaw Wyoming’s rights and responsibilities outlined in the seven interstate water compacts and three interstate water decrees the state is signatory to.   
• Andy Mueller, General Manager at the Colorado River District – Andy Mueller has been the General Manager of the Colorado River District since 2017. Prior to that, he worked as an attorney in Garfield and Ouray Counties and served on the River District’s board for nine years as representative, vice president, and president. His combined experience prepared him to lead the River District, whose work is to lead in the protection, conservation, use and development of the waters of the Colorado River for the residents of the West Slope and to safeguard for all of Colorado all waters of the Colorado River to which the state is entitled.
