Glenwood Springs, Colorado — As of early April, the Colorado River District has welcomed over 500 people to six of the eleven State of the River meetings scheduled across the Western Slope. In partnership with local water organizations, these events provide a sneak peak at runoff forecasts and inform communities about water issues and the state of the Colorado River Basin. Events have taken place in Montrose, Ridgway, Craig, Steamboat Springs, Rangely, and Carbondale.

Five more of these free public meetings are scheduled through the end of May. While each agenda will vary slightly, presentation topics will include:

  • Snowpack summaries and local runoff forecasts
  • Updates on Colorado River Basin negotiations, including the high-stakes negotiations between Basin States and the Bureau of Reclamation on the future operations of Lakes Mead and Powell
  • Information about the Colorado River District’s work to represent Western Slope water users in state and regional forums
  • Highlights from local water projects and other basin-specific interests

“The enthusiastic turnout so far underscores the strong interest West Slope residents have in our water future,” said Lindsay DeFrates, Deputy Director of Public Relations for the Colorado River District. “These meetings are open to everyone and offer a great opportunity to connect with community members and to hear directly from experts about the issues shaping our state and regional water landscapes.”

Each event is free, open to the public, and includes a light dinner. Registration is required.
