Project Description

Cary Denison serves as the Ouray County Director on the Colorado River Water Conservancy District.
Cary began his professional career in water resources over 20 years ago, working as a Water Commissioner for the State of Colorado, first in the San Miguel Basin and later in the Upper Gunnison Basin. He branched off into private consulting as the owner operator of Colorado Land and Water Specialists where he assisted private land owners with fisheries restoration, water rights consulting, and ranch management throughout the Colorado River Basin. After assisting Painted Sky RC&D develop and implement the Hartland Dam Modification and Fish passage project on the Gunnison River near Delta, Cary began working for Trout Unlimited as the Gunnison Basin Project Manager. While at TU, Cary oversaw numerous complex river restoration, fisheries, and water conservation projects. Primarily this work focused on agricultural water use and resulted in numerous successful endeavors like the Relief Ditch and Stewart Ditch diversion modification projects, the Lower Gunnison RCPP, and the implementation of the first conserved consumptive use initiatives in the Gunnison Basin. Currently, he is managing over 20,000 acres of ranchlands in the Upper Klamath Basin where he oversees numerous restoration projects aimed at improving watershed health for native fish while overseeing cattle and land management operations.
When not at work or serving his community, Cary enjoys spending time with his family and friends in the mountains and on the rivers of our great State.
