Sonja Chavez represents Gunnison County on the Board of Directors.
Sonja Chavez serves as the General Manager of the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District (UGRWCD) whose mission is to be an active leader in all issues affecting the water resources of the Upper Gunnison Basin.
Sonja is a native Coloradan and comes from a multi-generational ranching family. She owned and operated her own natural resources consulting firm (2003-2015) focused on coordinating a federal Selenium Management Program stakeholder task force and assisted Gunnison Basin stakeholders develop and secure funding packages for water conservation and hydro-electric projects. She has worked on Gunnison and Colorado River issues for more than 20 years and previously served as a Water Resource Specialist to the Colorado River Water Conservation District in Glenwood Springs working on natural resource policy, environmental compliance, water quality, fundraising and project management. Ms. Chavez also served as a Governor Appointee on the Water Quality Control Commission and currently represents the UGRWCD on the Gunnison Basin Roundtable. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in environmental biology and a Master of Arts degree in Limnology from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Her current term expires January of 2027.
